The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is an active breed indoors and out, especially Corgi puppies. They are great in apartments, as well as houses. They are highly intelligent, loyal dogs and they make great watch dogs. They are cattle herders by nature, so they may tend to try to herd everyone. They can be aggressive with other dogs, especially male on male, and dogs shorter than them. They like children, but hate to be teased.

The approximate adult size of the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is 10 to 12 inches to the highest point of the shoulder, and 25 to 30 pounds. Most dog breeds have certain inherited health problems and the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is no exception. They are prone to back problems, epilepsy, hereditary eye disease and obesity. Other diseases may also be significant threats, please contact your veterinarian for a complete list.

You should visit the veterinarian several times in the first year for shots, boosters and check ups. When your Corgi puppy becomes an adult, visit the veterinarian yearly for shots and check up. At six years and on, visit the veterinarian twice a year for check ups and shots. Remember; avoid feeding your dog sweets.

Corgi puppies should be brushed regularly. Brushing will help her maintain a clean and healthy coat and help you to keep a closer eye on their health and strengthen your emotional bond. A Corgi puppies teeth should be brushed at least twice a week with toothpaste and a toothbrush designed for dogs. Brushing removes the accumulation of plaque and tartar which can cause cavities and periodontal disease. Dog periodontal disease can lead to pain, loss of teeth, bad breath and other serious diseases. Toenails may need to be examined and clipped regularly. The toenails of the rear feet grow slower than the toenails of the front feet. A guillotine type trimmer is the best for this chore and competent instructions to accomplish this can be found online.

Everyone wants their Corgi puppies to be happy. A great way to keep them happy and healthy is to make their dog food at home, with the same quality of food that you would feed to your children or guests. But there are some things that are ok for humans but can cause pain, discomfort, sickness, or death in Corgi puppies. Here are the top ten things to be on the lookout for:

5. Grapes & Raisins
Grapes and Raisins are very toxic. It causes Acute Renal Failure (kidneys). Also, it causes them to stop eating and develop diarrhea.

4. Yeast
Bread dough (yeast) expands and also ferments, creating alcohol like enzymes which can poison your pet. It can also cause gastric distention, respiratory and vascular compromise, CNS depression and death.

3.Chocolate
White chocolate is the least toxic, dry cocoa powder, the most. Dog and cats renal function is slower than humans. This means it takes longer to dispel the chocolate from the animal in feces form. Therefore, poisoning the animal.

2.Acetaminophen
Never give acetaminophen to a cat or dog. The drug affects oxygen in the blood and it produces severe depression. It also produces abdominal pain in dogs. If not quickly eliminated from the body, just two extra-strength tablets in 24 hours will most likely kill a small pet.

1.Caffeine
If enough is eaten it can be fatal for both dogs and cats. The lethal dose of caffeine for dogs and cats is 150mg/kg body weight, and regular instant coffee contains over 60mg caffeine per teaspoon.

WARNING: If you plan on cooking for your Corgi puppies on a regular basis, please consult a vet or veterinary nutritionist to learn about what foods are good for your them, and what nutritional needs they have.

Cooking for your dogs is becoming very popular. Some owners, put off by the 2007 pet food contamination scandal, only trust what they make themselves. Others just like to treat their puppies to a homemade treat every so often. Either way, making food for your Corgi puppies can be good for their health, so long as you keep a few things in mind. Here are some tips for making homemade dogfood:

Stick with wholesome, unprocessed ingredients. Lean meats, whole grains, and vegetables are much better than leftover lasagna, or hamburger helper.

Know and avoid foods that are dangerous for dogs, such as chocolate, onions, and raw garlic.

Maintain a balanced diet. The rule of thumb for most homemade dog food recipes is 40% meat, 30% veggies, 30% starch, and 100% love.

Add in homecooked food slowly. Sudden changes in diet can cause indigestion and diarrhea.

There is a way to make bath time an easy, and maybe even enjoyable experience for you and your Corgi puppies. Teaching your Corgis the “Bath” command while they are still a puppies makes this possible. This command works so well that Lawrence and Sammy (my Corgi’s) jump into the bathtub all on their own! Here’s how to do it:

Say the “Bath” command and run to the tub. Give your puppies a treat for following you into the bathroom and up to the tub. Repeat this step a few times for the next few days.

Lay a towel or a traction mat in the bath tub, place your puppies’ favorite toy on the towel/mat.

Say the “Bath” command and run to the tub, this time help your puppies into the tub, rewarding him with a treat.

Play with your Corgi puppies for a few minutes in the bathtub (no water yet). Take them out of the tub, repeat this step a few times a day until your puppies get excited about “tub time”.

With the stopper not in the tub, run the water gently while you play with your Corgi puppies in the tub ( don’t fill it yet) . Repeat this step a few times until your puppies are used to having the water running while you play.

Put the stopper in the tub and let it fill slightly. Gradually increase the amount of water in the tub until you are able to easily bathe your Corgi puppies.

This shouldn’t take more than a week to teach. It seems like a lot of work, but trying to bathe dogs that are scared of even going near the bathroom is more work than you can imagine.

One bath every 3-4 weeks should be sufficient to keep your Corgi puppies clean and soft. Too much bathing will make his hair brittle and dry.

Teaching your Corgi puppies these five basic commands while they are young is very important. These commands are the basis for most other, more complex commands and training. If you have more than one puppy, teach each puppy separately.

1. Heel

This command should be used continually to promote control while walking. To teach this command:

Place your Corgi puppy on a training leash and let him walk ahead of you.

Suddenly call his name and call the command “Heel” while slapping your thigh.

Use the leash to lead him to your side.

Once your Corgi has gotten the hang of the basic heel command, you should begin to encourage him to come to your side around distractions. The heel command should ALWAYS be given positively, NEVER as a negative.

2. Sit

Encourage your Corgi puppy to sit in all situations. Give the command once; if there is no response, give the leash a tug and say the sit command again. Here is how to teach the sit command:

Take your Corgi puppy into a quiet room with no distractions, bring a handful of treats.

Pick up a single treat, bringing it slightly above your puppies nose, say “Sit”.

Use your free hand to squeeze his waist muscles below the ribs until he is sitting.

Once in the Sitting position, praise him and give him the treat.

Repeat these steps about 5-6 times per training session. After 4-5 training sessions, slowly fade out the treats while continuing to use the command.

3. No

Most people will shout the No command. This sounds like barking to your puppy, he is going to get excited which will worsen the situation. Most people will also use the No command with their dogs name, you should never use your puppy’s name when you are mad. Here is an easy way to teach your Corgi puppy the meaning of the “No” command:

Secretly place a small piece of cheese on the floor in a neighboring room.

Put your Corgi puppy onto his leash, bringing him into the heel position.

Casually walk toward the cheese.

As soon as your puppy notices the cheese snap back on the leash and give the “No” command.

Walk past the cheese as if nothing happened.

Repeat 4-5 times to drive the message home.

Hopefully by teaching these three basic commands, your Corgi puppies will be set with the foundations to build later training on.

Choosing a Corgi breed is hard to do, as both are great companions. Whether you choose a Cardigan or a Pembroke, remember these tips.

Choosing a responsible breeder always comes before the choice of a puppy. Make sure that the kennels are clean, and the puppies are well-socialized. Also make sure that the adults are well- tempered and well-behaved. The adults are a great example of how the puppy may turn out. The breeder should be willing and able to answer questions, guarantee the puppy, and take the puppy back if it doesn’t work out.

You should look for a healthy looking puppy (no runny eyes/runny nose, clean ears and skin, etc.), is active, and likes people. Although the corgi is happy to lie by the fire, or hang out by your feet as you write a blog, it is an active breed and enjoys playing ball ,Frisbee, and tug-o-war, sometimes to the point of exhaustion.

Corgis are a good child’s dog. Their guarding and herding instincts help to keep the child safe, and their kind, gentle disposition makes them a great best friend.

Corgis seem to have very few disease problems. There have been some incidences of progressive retinal atrophy, an eye disease that causes blindness, and hip dysplasia, spinal disc problems, autoimmune diseases, and cataracts can crop up. It is advised to have your Corgi x-rayed for hip dysplasia and other joint malformations, and eye examinations are recommended. There have been some temperament problems of late, manifesting as excessive barking and aggression, so care must be taken in selecting a breeder and a puppy.

Corgis love to eat, and weight can be an issue. Make sure to research your puppies food before feeding it to him to prevent overfeeding.
