The Difference Between Cardigan and Pembroke Corgi Puppies

Pembroke and Cardigan Corgis were the only herding dogs in Wales until around 1800. They were commonly known as Corgis. The Welsh translation of the word “Corgi” is dwarf dog. Although they share a name, the Cardigan and Pembroke Corgis developed as different to completely separate breeds.

Both the Cardigan and Pembroke Corgi have a rich history stemming from wolf breeds in Northern Europe. The Cardigan’s were brought to Wales by the Celts, whereas the Pembroke Corgi came by way of the Swedish. Both were crossbreed with existing Welsh herding dog’s to produce the Corgi’s we know today.

A major physical difference between the two breeds is the tail. Pembroke Welsh Corgis have no tails. Nobody is sure how this came to be, but most Pembroke Corgis are born without tails. It is believed that in Wales, when the Pembroke’s herded larger animals like cows, they would more often than not have their tail stepped on, causing injury.Farmers, recognizing something needed to be done began to dock the tails. This taillessness evolved in the Pembroke, and has become part of the breed.  If not born tailless, a Pembroke has its tail docked to adhere to the breed standard. Cardigans, however, do have tails. The Cardigan breed standard states that Cardigan’s are specifically supposed to have tails with “fox-like brushes that reach well below the hock”.

The Cardigan’s ears are large and not in proportion with the head, unlike the medium sized ears found on the Pembroke . The two breeds share a rather similar temper, but when closely examined, the Pembroke has a very bold and brash personality, while the Cardigan’s personality is more calm and placid.

Today the difference between Pembroke and Cardigan Corgis can be seen through differences in their individual physical appearances, temperaments, and histories. Despite the similarity in name, Pembroke’s and Cardigans are entirely separate breeds.
